HAYWARD — State workplace safety regulator Cal/OSHA is investigating the death of a 48-year-old man who fell from a ladder last week while working as a subcontractor at BART’s maintenance yard in Hayward.
On Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m., Raimundo Sanchez of Hayward was using an extension ladder to change a photocell on an external light fixture for a BART contractor, ABI Services Inc. of Union City, according to the contractor, BART and Cal/OSHA.
While descending the ladder, a Cal/OSHA spokeswoman said, Sanchez fell from about 7 feet up – apparently after receiving an electric shock – and struck his head.
Sanchez, a native of Nicaragua, was taken by ambulance to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he was pronounced dead two days later. His organs were donated.
Officials from BART and ABI Services said Sanchez had been wearing protective headgear and was in the presence of a BART safety monitor. Cal/OSHA said its investigation would be completed within six months.
