OSHA e-Tool – “Why Forklift Safety Training IS Important”

Forklift SafetyWhy is hearing protection being worn in this area by 1 person? Most likely a good part of why he walked into the forklift? Besides not paying attention to where he was walking? Absence of aisles for pedestrians? How many more safety violations are in this picture?

Powered Industrial Trucks (Forklift) eTool

Powered industrial trucks, devices (PID), commonly called forklifts or lift trucks, are used in many industries, primarily to move materials. They can be used to move, raise, lower, or remove large objects or a number of smaller objects on pallets or in boxes, crates, or other containers.

The hazards commonly associated with powered industrial trucks vary depending on the vehicle type and the workplace where the truck is used. Each type of truck presents different operating hazards. For example, a sit-down, counterbalanced high lift rider truck is more likely than a motorized hand truck to be involved in a falling load accident, because the sit-down rider truck can lift a load much higher than a hand truck. Workplace conditions also present different hazards. For example, retail establishments often face greater challenges than other worksites in maintaining pedestrian safety.

The best way to protect employees from injury also depends on the type of truck operated and worksite where it is being used. This eTool* specifically provides information on OSHA’s Powered Industrial Truck requirements [29 CFR 1910.178] and industry best practices addressing:

  1. The forklift training is so important. I used to work at a warehouse that had a few forklifts. One of the issues I always saw was that the people walking on the floor didn’t know what to do to be safe around forklift drivers. The drivers could only do so much because they had specific rules to follow but the people did not know those same rules. I think even if you aren’t getting certified, you should know how to be safe around forklifts. http://www.alltranstraining.com.au/forklift-license

  2. Ouch! I think that really hurts.

We don’t have to rely on safety equipment and tools alone but also to our self. Be vigilant, aware, and alert. Let’s engage our self in proper safety training that will really help improve our knowledge and awareness. Accidents are everywhere and can happen to everyone. Even in the safest place.
